New Exchange 2003 Email Server

Initial Directions

All Harwich teachers and staff members have access to an email account on the Harwich file server. This email account may be used for educational and job related purposes. Teachers may request additional email accounts for student related activity groups or classroom projects.

Email accounts are are issued for a school calendar year, and available in the general format of 'username@harwich.edu' . Teachers may or may not use their assigned  'username@harwich.edu' email account however, based on such factors as school access to computers or multiple accounts on other mail servers.  Teachers may have conflicts with scheduled times, availability or adequate access to computers to read or respond to email at school.  Although email accounts may be read at home, school or any computer with Internet access, individuals may prefer to use other Internet service providers or other established email accounts. Teachers may also prefer not to have their email account listed because of confusion with other existing email accounts that they more regularly access.  Teachers and staff may request their name to be added or removed from this list at any time. Interested readers may or may not find staff listed for a variety of reasons and this listing therefore does not necessarily include all staff who use email at home or school.

The Harwich email server system may be accessed by either a web browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape), or by using a dedicated email client program such as Outlook or Outlook Express. A web browser is the preferred access program for user convenience and in order to take full advantage of web messaging including the web calendar. You may continue to use an email client, but you must configure the reader with your Harwich username, password, name of the Harwich email server and enable authentication. Outlook Express is available as part of Microsoft Internet Explorer and can be configured in less than 3 minutes. An example Outlook Express configuration file is available as either a web page or Acrobat file for your reference. Outlook is available as a part of various Microsoft Office suite packages. If you choose to use an email client at home, you will no longer be able to relay mail through the Harwich server. Instead, you must use your Internet Service Provider's SMTP mail server to send mail from your Harwich email account.

In general, the advantage of web messaging is convenience and access from any computer since all mail is saved on the server. The disadvantage of web messaging is that web access speed is dependent upon Internet bandwidth and computer hardware. The advantage of Outlook or Outlook Express is better downloading performance, and all email is saved locally on the user's computer hard drive with unlimited archive space.
