Course Description
The purpose of the course is to facilitate acquisition, improvement, and
development of skills, strategies, and habits needed to succeed in all areas of
the high school curriculum.
All students need to practice effective organizational, study, and
communication strategies in order to perform successfully within all of their
content area classes. In addition, they need to develop and maintain productive
habits that reflect their individual learning styles and abilities. Academic
Support Lab is a course that addresses the need for acquisition and
internalization of these habits and skills as it pertains to individual
students with disabilities. Individualized curriculum that is geared to support
the students in their quest for success in the classroom and in the overarching
goal for students to become independent lifelong learners is the focus of this
course.
Academic Support Lab is a class that offers direct remedial instruction for
students eligible for special education services in grades 9- 12. The class is a small group and instruction is
often individualized. Classes are taught in a direct, systematic, and
multi-sensory way that is responsive to the individualized objectives of the
students’ Individualized Education Programs.
Grading/Expectations
Students are
expected to come to class ready to learn and participate. They are required to have a notebook, writing
utensil, planner and textbooks each class.
They are expected to follow the rules of the student handbook. Grade is determined by effort and points are
assigned daily. Students are graded
according to rubric in three categories daily: preparedness, use of class time,
and attitude. A point total of 0-12 is possible for each class. The points are calculated at the end
of the term and a grade is assigned accordingly. Students are not penalized for
excused absences; unexcused absences will receive a 0/12 for the class.
