Educators:
What is a Web Quest?..
WebQuests are constructive inquiry-oriented activities. WebQuests
encourage learners to use the information they gather from the World Wide
Web, for an end project. WebQuests can be done completely on the
WWW or can be a combination of resources for information.
WebQuests can be a Short Term or Long Term Projects. Short
Term Projects are defined as taking 2 or 3 class periods and Long Term
Projects may take several weeks or months depending on the finished project.
A good WebQuest takes the student beyond gathering information to
analyzing information.
Simply, a WebQuest is a lesson plan on the World Wide Web that encourages
students to gather, analyze and synthesize information and create an end
presentation to demonstrate the experience!
Harwich Elementary School Library Media Center stretches the definition
of what is a WebQuest! Our Web Quests are quests for information
but are much like guided tours and Treasure Hunts on the Internet.
Our Web Quests are completed in about one hour with the students working
in teams of two and three to a computer. The Web Quests are often
used as the students introduction to the World Wide Web and the Internet.
Our computers are not filtered. Web Quests are a great way of helping
our students find information on the WWW, on a special subject, a little
more efficiently then using search engines and weeding through all the
"junk". The Web Quest subjects are always linked with projects going
on in class but, are not (at this time) activities that are ongoing and
cumulative. The Web Quest is the activity. When the last step
is done, the students take the information back to their classroom and
hopefully, discuss what they found, how they found it and how they are
going to use the information.
Our future is bright. I believe that our "Web Quests" will be edited
and improved as our learning community becomes more accustom and comfortable
with this technology!
