The Platt Amendment
Named after Orville H. Platt, the Senator from Conn. Idea came from Secretary of War Elihu Root.
In June 1901 the US required the Cubans to incorporate restrictions into the constitution in order to avoid US annexing Cuba completely:
1. Cuba not to permit a foreign power to secure any control of the island.
