Munn v. Illinois

• The Supreme Court upheld the Granger laws, establishing as constitutional the principle of public regulation of private businesses involved in serving the public interest. As early as 1837, a few state governments had acted to regulate railroads, but it was not until 1870s that state regulatory commissions became widespread.
