Carl Schurz
1829-1906; American editor, Union soldier, and Republican political leader.
Born in Germany; fought in revolution 1848-1849 against autocratic rulers of the German state.
Made his way to U.S. in 1850’s; went to Wisconsin and became leader in Antislavery fight. Campaigned for Lincoln in election in 1860.
