Sailing Team Logbook 2005

Wednesday (6/8/05) Sailing team rallies for its first annual sail picinic at Scarborough's beach. Team holds a neat barbecue and later a tough touch football game. Teams include coach Dickson, sonny, gillian, patrick, Bmc, dewey vs. coach Leach, peter, bryan, josh, jesse, tim. Paige, Heather, Morgan watch for good luck. More pics later but here is of the guys taking the plunge from COMMANDER on the way back to the harbor. Go team!

Saturday (6/4/05) Cape and Island Championship. Vineyard Sailors edge Nauset for Cape & Islands Champiohship. Sophomore Ellery Whitworth and freshmen crew Emily Reich proved unshakable holding off area sailing teams to win the 7th annual Cape & Islands League Sailing Championship in a light easterly on Pleasant Bay Saturday. Whitworth strung together a series of top finishes of 1-1-2-1-2-2 for a low point score of 9 in Division - A holding off Nauset senior Mass Maritime bound Alex Haas and his brother Matt a freshmen. Six-one Haas got his boat moving in light air as the day progressed scoring 4-4-3-2-1-1, but not in time to give Whitworth trouble. Bishop Stang's Emily Babbit and Caitlyn Hill also punched in for 20 points. The two seniors will go to Georgetown and Hawaii in the fall. Nantucket High's Morgan Sutherland with Harrison O'Rourke had a low 15 points in Division - B ahead of the Warriors 18 points scored by another Maritime recruit Clint Young with junior Brianna Wall crewing. In third place in B, was Bishop Stang's seniors Sean Cavanaugh and Emily Prior with 19 points. MV's junior/senior combo of Elise Smartwood and crew Celeste Bailey scored 22 points for fourth place. For Harwich and Chatham sailing squads the going was a bit tougher as the frustrations of light air sailing were ever present and their day was not coming together. Chatham had just come off a fleet race win at the annual Figawi High School Championship less than a week before. Schools competing in order of finish and total points were Martha's Vineyard (31), Nauset (33), Bishop Stang (39), Nantucket (44), Chatham (59), Sandwich (61), Harwich (71). The event was hosted by the Chatham High School coach Greg Kelly and was held at Chatham Yacht Club. The winning team will be engraved on the Ann Antollini Memorial Award.

Friday (5/20/05) The Harwich Sailing Team is featured in the IN-THE-ZONE article in the Cape Cod Times Sports section today. Great shot of Peter Sawyer and "iron abs" Jess Hewitt.

Thursday (5/19/05) Team travels to Padanarum for race against Bishop Stang a team that has been having a fair season.

Wednesday (5/18/05) We hold a decent all hands practice in a 5 knot easterly. Coach Dickson calls for crew skippering duty and boats are remarkably close (almost).

Tuesday (5/17/05) We travel to Nantucket and win! Rough Riders go up two races only to be tied from behind by the Whalers. Skippers Tim Adams, Bryan Boyle and Peter Sawyer win the tie-breaker and Harwich sails home victorious! Coach Dickson says "finally we are out of our losing streak." This is out first win in two seasons.

Monday. (5/16/05) Good day for a light air practice. Team rigs 6 boats and heads to outer harbor. Guest appearance by Jim Adams college freshmen.

Saturady (5/14/05) Leaving this space for report from Coach Dickson on how the girls made out?

Friday (5/13/05) More practice. Welcome back Quincy Dewing. A sunny afternoon with a fair southwesterly breeze 12 knots. Coach Dickson prepares the girls for womens champiohship tomorrow.

Thursday (5/12/05) We sail at Sandwich and take some lumps 0-3. We did win a consolation race!

Wednesday (5/11/05) Tabor sends a good team and we find we are having as much trouble battling weather as them. The Seawolves sweep 3-0.

Tuesday (5/10/05) A beautiful late afternoon practice after a tough four days of weather. WE get seven boats on the line with Josh Keyes driving for the first time ever and welcome new teammate Jessica Comeau. Jess Hewitt with Paige Mallory and Heather Mallory with Meghanne Currie are practicing forthe up coming womens sectional next week. Tomorrow the team takes on Tabor Academy JV at home. Lead skippers Peter Sawyer, Brian Boyle Tim Adams spend the afternoon trying to get psyched. Wind is shifty east-northeast and we spend nearly the entire time practicing for good starts in light current.

Tuesday (5/4/05) Good six boat practice east of the channel in a steady 10 knot sea breeze. Coach John Dickson and some of the team are interviewed by the Cape Cod Times reporter for the "In the Zone" article to appear later in the newspaper :)

Monday (5/3/05) We raced an outstanding Nauset High team at Town Cove and lost 0-3. The Warriors led by Chatham Yacht Club skipper Clint Young went 3-0 over the Rough Riders. We were gambling for good starts against a very controling team. This was a good lesson which we continue to revisit. Second row starts in team racing is a very big handicap for any team.

WEdnesday (4/13/04) Many of the sailing team are off to Ireland on their spring trip. However, four boats manage a tight practice and we work on mark traps and starts in preparation for Nantucket coming tomorrow. Pete Sawyer sailed with John D., Jess Hewitt with Patick Blute, BMc with Gillian, Tim Adams with Josh Keyes, Tom Leach ran the committee boat. Pete over took Tim in the long distance race back to the dock. Gorgeous brisk day, wind north 5-8 knots.

Tuesday (4/12/05) We run into a road block against an adept Sandwich Team led by Kit O'Connell with Brian Cusick (both seniors). The Knights go 1-2-3 in the first two races as the temperature plunged from 50F to 36F and snow flurries began. Harwich got off to a great start in the third race with Brian Boyle with Sarah Hosseini and Peter Sawyer with Morgan McCulloch getting the jump on the Knights. Pete held to a second place finish in that race.

Monday (4/11/05) Brief practice in a Northeast breeze. We stay close to Saquatucket Bluffs and work on starts.

Saturday (4/9/05) Three of our sailors do an awesome job in the high school musical "Fame"featuring Brian Boyle as Goody, Patirck Blute as Tyrone Jackson, and Jess Hewitt in the chorus. What an amazing group we have juggling school, sailing and theatre... Bravo!

Thursday (4/7/05) Dartmouth sweeps Harwich 3-0. Make no mistake, the Dartmouth High sailing team (3-1) has a three man wrecking crew bound for a shot at the New England Schools Sailing Association's Mark Trophy. It was no surprise that the Indians led by Tufts bound Peter Bermudias with another senior Creighton Armstrong pulled three first place finishes over Harwich (0-3), followed by teammates senior T.J Scott with junior Lydia Armstrong and junior Alex Cavanaugh with sophomore Matt Enoksen. The Rough Rider's Brian Boyle(J) with Paige Mallory(J) made the best showing for Harwich in the 15 knot breeze but were beaten to the first mark by the entire Padanarum squad. Others sailing for Harwich were Brendan McVickar with Jessica Hewitt, Tim Adams with Heather Mallory, Peter Sawyer with Glen Mallory, Heather Mallory with Josh Keyes. Photo1 Photo2

Wednesday (4/6/05) A picture perfect day! Medium SSW breeze and six boats on the line with coach Leach crewing for Heather then Jesse. Good close team racing with several mark traps. Now we're getting the hang of it!

Also, mucho thanks to Mr. Jamie McGrath from Pine Harbor woodworks for lending us shelter for the season in a very nice 8x10 woodshed to house all our sails and equipment. We have a nice home for the next three months next to the Harbormasters Office! Photo 1.

We sail against tough Dartmouth tomorrow at Saquatucket.

Tuesday (4/5/05)Team has a tough race at the Vineyard going 0-3 in straight sets. Brendan reported as having the best finish with third in the third race.

Monday (4/4/05) Short practice and boat tune-up in puffy conditions in outer harbor in preparation for road trip to Martha's Vineyard tomorrow (bus leaves at noon from high school). Tim Adams and Glen Mallory catch a buff on the wrong side and suffer a knockdown and first swim of the season. (BBoyle's unscheduled dunk in the harbor last week doesn't count!)

Friday (4/1/05) Nothing like a six boat practice that makes for good team racing. Brian Boyle w/ Gillian Smith, Brendan McVickar w/ Sonnie Raferty, Pete Sawyer w/ Paige Mallory, vs. Heather Mallory w/ Meghanne Currie, Coach Dickson w/ Josh Keyes, Jesse Hewitt w/ Coach Leach. Close team racing and a real taste of mark trapping advantaged the coaching team, however, this practice really showed us all that we have some very capable sailors who only need to understand they could be rock solid if they can reduce mistakes on the course. Fundamental stuff we need to work hard on is finding the groove quickly after a tack; wasting no space at the leeward mark roundings; understanding how and why to take the inside gap offered by your team boat in the mark trap; communicating with other boats on your team to control your opponents; finding clear air.

Thursday (3/31/05) FALMOUTH SAILORS TOP HARWICH 1-3. Freshmen Peter Sawyer with crew Jessica Hewitt and junior Brian Boyle skippering with Paige Mallory started the Harwich sailors off in the right direction yesterday taking their first heat sailing 1-3-6 against Falmouth yesterday off Saquatucket Harbor. It was the Clippers however that showed their mettle mixing it up with the Rough Riders and sweeping the next three races lead by skippers Maggie Sogin and Lizzy Kirk in a moderate northeast breeze and forty degree temperature . Falmouth is now 1-1 having lost to Vineyard Haven two days earlier. Others sailing for Harwich were Heather Mallory, Meghanne Currie, Sarah Hosseini, Brenden McVickar, Josh Keyes and Tim Adams. Wednesday (3/30/05) Good team practice in the turning basin. Team looking better. Looks like Heather Malllory, Brian Boyle, Pete Sawyer and Tim Adams will share skippering duties against Falmouth tommorrow at home. Coach Leach gets some good shots of the team underway. Photo 1 Photo 2

Tueday (3/29/05) Practice called on account of smallcraft warning and 25 knot puffs on the harbor. Team goes to DQ for a chalk talk with Coach D.

Friday (3/25/05) Good Friday and kids get a break from school... but this team is about sailing. Eight teammates show up at noon for a great practice in the outer harbor on a sunnny afternoon.

Congratulations are in order for ex-Barnstable sailing Coach Jim Terkelsen who has a new job in his sailing carreer. Jim is now race coach at Eckerd College. Jim was a top coach and brought BHS to the top of the sport several times including a National Championship. We will miss coach T, who was known to go out of his way to befriend the competition, and wish him the very best on successes at the collegiate level in sunny Florida.

Wednesday (3/23/05) Snow manages to hold off for 24 hours and team gets in a chilly (37F 10 knot NE) very short practice. We are scheduled to race Falmouth March 31st at Home so team racing practice is very important, especially for our freshmen. We have moved the team float nearer to the west side of the harbor to be visible on the webcam at the harbor. New link on webpage shows live image of team float, boats, rigging and disembarking. Of course best time to notice any activity is between 2:30 to 3:15PM and 5:00 to 6PM (accept for short practices like today when we were done at 4:30PM due to windchill). Here is dry suit order; for the record each student resposible for his/her drysuit: Sarah Houseini #1; Brian Boyle #2; Josh Keyes #3; Patrick Blute #4; Glenn Mallory #5; Tim Adams #6; Peter Sawyer #7; Gillian Smith #8; Paige Mallory #9; Meghanne Currie #10; Jesse Hewitt #11; Heater Mallory (C) #12; Sonnie Raftery; Morgan McCulloch.

Tuesday (3/22/05) First Day of practice. Raw determination the team now 15 strong get 8 boats launched and 4 rigged for our first sail! Dry suits assigned and there are almost enough to equip entire team thanks to much appreciated support from the high school athletic department. We have a short channel race out to Nun '4' and back. Enjoy it while we can as a late season snowstorm is in the forecast.

Monday (3/21/05) First Day of spring! Coach John rallys the team and pulls 420's from the boat house on Bank Street in preparation for the trip over to the harbor. Tom Leach, Jesse Hewitt, Peter Sawyer, Johnny D and Brenden McVickar tow the 420 float from Stone Horse YC to Saquatucket Harbor in preparation.
