Sailing Team Logbook 2003

5/31/02 - PLEASANT BAY - Cape & Islands High School Invitational Championship. Competing in their last High School Regatta Neal Donovan (with Junior Heather Mallory) went 8-5-8, and Shawna O'Loughlin and Gina Legge went 2-4-6-5 before being replaced by Jim Adams with Paige Mallory in A Division (who also went 8th) and Mary Wesp sailing with Jessica Hewitt in B showed consistancy in their scores through the end of the day going 8-5-5-5. The real wonder for Harwich was combining Jim Adams with freshman Quincy Dewing for the last four heats of A - Division where they improved each race (4-3-2-1)sticking with our fleet racing plan of hitting the left corner where air seemed steady. The event was rock solid with great skippers at the Top won by Nauset led by Clint Young one point over Dartmouth's Zak Kavanaugh and Sandwich ten points back at 63 led by Matt Bourque's low point 19 in B - Division. For Harwich 81 points landed us in sixth just one point behind Bishop Stang a team we won and lost to in the regular season.

5/29/02 - PLEASANT BAY - The Harwich sail team returns to it's old stomping grounds to take on Chatham sans seniors. Mr. Dickson reports a favorable impression of our team of underclassman as Jim Adams and Paige Mallory threw some decent mark traps to leverage Mary Wesp with Jessica Hewitt, and Heather Mallory sailing with Meghanne Currie. Enough so the two teams were tied 2-2 and had to sail a rubber match in the smokie southwester. Chatham may have won our last race of the regular season, however, the Rough Rider afterguard was impressive and shows soundness for next year.

5/27/03 - HARWICH PORT - We sail hard against Sandwich with Neil and Heather, and Shawna with Gina, going 1-2 1-2 in the first two heats. Not to be detered Sandwich (12-3) came back strong winning the next there heats in an oscilating northwesterly after the course had to be shifted three times. Although Sandwich went home victorious, it was Harwich's good sportsmenship that made the event with friendly Sandwich a good thing. We are now breaking down the boats and relocating some to Pleasant Bay for the Cape Invitational Championship which is being hosted by Chatham High at Chatham Yacht Club on Saturday. We will sail against Chatham in a make-up with the underclassmen as our seniors are now finished school. The seniors will instead enjoy their senior activity day barbecue at Brooks Park.

5/21/03 - HARWICH PORT - The Harwich Rough Riders coming off a win over Chatham Tuesday, sailed into rough waters at home at Wychmere Harbor with a 1-3 loss against Nauset High School. The Warriors on a roll this season with a successful 12-3 record were led by seniors Heather Nickerson and Brian Edwards, juniors Adam Schwebach and Jessica Jeffreys and sophomores Clint Young and Haley Lindahl. Harwich appeared to take control early in the first race led by Neal Donovan with crew Heather Mallory setting a trap at the jibe mark to spring Shawna O'Loughlin with Gina Legge but it was Nauset's chance to return fire closing the ranks with its good boat speed that carried the day throughout the match. Harwich is now 4 -9 which includes beating the Chatham Blue Devils 3-1 at Wychmere Harbor on Tuesday in a close raced rivalry. In that race, Harwich skipper Jim Adams with Paige Mallory managed a remarkable triple mark trap in the second race to spring his entire team. Nauset completes its regular season and Harwich will race again against Sandwich and Chatham next week.

05/15/03 PADANARAM - We Win! Harwich 3, Bishop Stang 2. Harwich was led by Neal Donovan and Heather Mallory, who controled the key races at New Bedford Yacht Club.Jim Adams and Paige Mallory made important moves in the win. Making her varsity debut as skipper, Gina Legge sailed with Meghanne Currie. Harwich is now 3-7.

05/14/03 A sunny day practice (really partly cloudy), something that has eluded the team this season. Jim sailing with Paige; Heather steering with Matt; Brian Boyle showing prowness steering with Mary; Neal sailing with Jessica; Mr. Leach sailing with Gina. Good Fleet racing but team remains spread. Gina takes a turn at driving with Heather in the last practice heat and shows good boat speed. Bishop Stang away at NBYC tomorrow.

05/13/03 NANTUCKET - Strong wind and experience lead to loss for the squad to the Whalers. Shawna reported we won the first heat losing 1-3 after Rough Rider mishaps followed. Shawna & Gina managed being over the line early twice and Jimmy and Qunicy gave new meaning to the term pearling by capsizing twice. Hopefully, we can shake this before Thursdays race at Bishop Stang.

05/12/03 More practice... a good thing. Jimmy driving with Paige; Shawna and Gina; Quincy with Matt then Mr. Dickson; Mary and Jessica; Heather and Brian. A good warm-up on a warm "sunny" day in Harwich Port. We are ready to take on Nantucket tomorrow at the Island. Team will depart the High School at ten sharp after the MCAS.

05/12/03 sorry about no reports. We managed a few losses 0-3 to Nauset and 0-3 to Sandwich. Team spirit in tact.

04/16/03 Practice makes perfect! A good session on the outer harbor with 5 boats on the water: Shawna/Quincy; Coach John/Jessica; Mary/Heather; Jimmy/Brian; Gina/Paige practice starts and tight fleet racing. Meghann gets a motorboat driving lesson from Mr. Leach. The wind starts warm southwest then calm. Finally it begins to come from the northwest and clocks to the east by quarter to five, as we sail in it comes on like a frieght train and all boats manage to get safely back to the dock not without mishap. Heinz Proft calls from the Harbormasters Office to report neighbors on Pleasant Bay calling that the Chatham HS sailing team has completely capsized in Pleasant Bay with coaching rescue effort losing control. We contact Chatham Harbormaster and Harwich Fire Dept both responding. Sailors and 3 of the capsized Chatham boats drift ashore at the Head of the Bay as a fourth boat is reportedly righted and sails back to the CYC.

04/15/03 HARWICH PORT - Contending with a strong southwesterly breeze puffing to 18 knots, Bishop Stang beat the Harwich sailors 3-0 in the shifty confines of Wychmere Inner Harbor. An extended capsize of one of the Bishop Stang boats outside the breakwater in chilly water and a righting with the help of dry suited teammate Bishop Stang's Ethan Duclous who jumped in the cold water to assist his teammates caused postponement. The coaches decided discretion the better part of valor and moved the race inside the harbor. Well it was tax day and Harwich sailors were being taxed on this one. Skippers Jim Adams and Shawna O'Loughlin side tracked each other outside the committee boat before the start of the third race, Heather missed a hiking strapped and went over the high side overboard, splash, requiring Neal Donovan to return for a pick-up. Jim Adams with Paige Mallory found themselves caught in irons several times on the course. The Rough Riders won the start in the first race but lost their lead in the 30 degree shifts. Stang went 1-3-5 and 1-3-6 in the first and second race led by sophomores Sean Cavanaugh with crew AJ Montero. The crafty Stang sailors took the final heat led by Emily Babbitt with Julia Southworth followed by their second boat with Chris Bourque and Amanda Sparks.

04/10/03 - HARWICHPORT - Senior skipper Neal Donovan with crewmate Heather Mallory got the Rough Rider back on a winning track with a solid 3-1 win over Nantucket. The Whaler took the first heat with a solid 1-2-4 finish led by Casey Barlett with Amanda Nichols. In the second heat Donovan wreaked havoc with a double mark trap which leverage teammates Shawna O'Loughlin with Gina Legge into third with Oliver Wallace managing the second for Nantucket, giving Harwich a 1-3-5. Harwich went on strong to wrap-up the final two races with stable finishes going 1-2-4 and 1-2-6 with great boat speed by the team of seniors O'Loughlin and Legge and junior Jim Adams with freshman Paige Mallory taking two first place finishes. Harwich (1-3) will next sail against Bishop Stang on April 15th at Stone Horse Yacht Club.

04/3/03 HARWICH PORT - The Rough Rider sailors led by seniors Shawna O'Loughlin and crew Gina Legge were unable to leverage the home team against a well groomed Dartmouth High at Wychmere Harbor. Dartmouth went 1-2-4 in the first race led by New England Junior Doublehanded Championship contender Zach Kavanaugh who was part of the Dartmouth's team that qualified for the Mallory Trophy National Fleet Racing Championship in San Francisco. Dartmouth went 1-2-5, 1-2-5 in the next two races in the oscillating 6 knot Northeast and 45°F wind. Dartmouth also showed promise with skipper Ben Siegel and Peter Creighton who traded places in first and second position as Harwich's Jim Adams with Paige Mallory rounded in 5th in two heats. Harwich lost its bid for the Cape & Islands Championship last year to Dartmouth and both teams saw a plethora of sailors graduate leaving Harwich for a rebuilding season with sophomores, juniors and eager freshmen.

04/2/03 - MARION - The Seawolves sweep Harwich 3-0. Sailing for Harwich Shawna O'Loughlin with Gina Legge, Neal Donovan with Heather Mallory and Jim Adam skippering with Paige Mallory. Coach Dickson reported Harwich slow in light air but Jim Adams was close in a tight pack with his teammates. Unfortunately, Tabors third team was too good. Tomorrow we sailagainst Dartmouth at Wychmere Harbor.

04/1/03 - VINEYARD HAVEN - Our first race of the season against MV shows Harwich promise as the new Harwich team loses 0-3 in straight races. Wind Speed 12 Knots from the West and air temp 37.94 °F. Coach Dickson reported that Neal Donovan, Shawna O'Loughlin and Jimmy Adams skippering held an early lead in the first race but were over taken by the more experienced Vineyarders.

03/26/03 - Teaming up: Neal with Heather; Jimmy with Paige; Mary & John with Meghann; Shawna and Gina. The new kids begin to understand the mark trap. A good practice in 50°F light SW wind. We get a team picture taken too.

03/25/03 - Air temperature 36°F wind SW @ 10knots. Six person practice puts three boats on the line. Shawna driving with Gina, Heal and Heather, and Jimmy with Page. We practice a bunch of starts and whistle calls. Water is now turned on and heads are open at yacht club.

03/24/03 - Medium air practice gets us to outer harbor in easterly breeze. Several good fleet racing heats and crew changes.

03/20/03 - Good turn out for first practice in light air. We get the boats off the dock and have a warm-up in Wychmere Harbor.

03/03/03 - Athletic Director Mark Sugarmeyer posts 2002 Spring Sports Team Schedule. See our Schedule by clicking on link in the Menu column.

We will be pulling boats out of the Bank Street Boat House and transporting on Monday March 17th @ 3 PM.
