How will I be graded in a Performing Arts class?

Participation is key which of course means ATTENDANCE and giving of
yourself completely is equally important. Attendance in class is as
important as attendance at dress rehearsals and performances. We will also
be adding 4 playing/singing "quizzes" per semester in which choral students
will be "quarteted" or octeted" up and graded, quarterly sight-singing assessment, as
well as an occaisional written response to a performance, the annual WebQuest(last
year's is still posted on this page), and the student's self-assessment of their conduct
and effort make up their grade. We are required to administer a written mid-term and
final exam of which a hefty percentage is performance-based. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO
BE A VIRTUOSO OR CHILD PRODIGY TO EARN AN A!!!!!!!

Music theory students are graded onweekly quizzes(LOTS OF THEM!), as well as
periodic notebook checks, computer work, and participation in class. Independent
Study folks are graded on the completion of monthly tasks that WE SAT DOWN AND
AGREED TO UPON THE SUBMISSION OF YOUR PROPOSAL. Instumental
Instruction people will be graded on their progress and submitted CDs of their work on
the material assigned by their private instructor and all are expected to become
prfficient with the 12-track recorder.

Do we have to stay for the whole performance?

ABSOLUTELY! A strong Performing Arts program is a team effort which
involves supporting everyone who is involved. Also, this is an
educational experience for all.

What is the concert call?

The "concert call" or "call" is the time for performers to be at the
performance space prior to the actual performance(USUALLY ONE HOUR)in order
to get set up, warmed up, and organize music and equipment. My required call
is one hour before the concert begins. This is a universal time in the
world of performing arts.

What is the concert dress?

Black on the bottom and white on top is the concert dress for both
choral and instrumental performers. LADIES-If you opt to wear a
skirt(pants are acceptable) and it is above your knees you must wear
black hose. THIS IS NOT A FASHION SHOW OR AN EVENING OF CLUBBING IN
EUROPE! Our POPS Concert will be themed again this year after the fun and success
of our Night At the Rock Opera of last year. Even though we will be doing a WebQuest
on the music, world events, and fashion of the 1960's it wouldn't hurt to start thinking
about an appropriate costume soon!
IT IS A CONCERT PERFORMANCE. GENTLEMEN-Coat and tie is not required but is
certainly welcome. TO ALL- SNEAKERS, JEANS, AND T-SHIRTS ARE FORBIDDEN!
YOU
WILL NOT PERFORM IF YOU COME SPORTING ANY OF THOSE ITEMS!

If I'm not in the Theate classes can I still do the play and/or the musical?

OH YES!!!!!!! Come one, come all!!!!!!

If I am cast in a show, what can I expect?

You are making a commitment that must be honored through to the night of strike. You
are therefore committed to be at ALL rehearsals and be on time, learn your lines and
know your blocking (pencils attached firmly to hand at all times PLEASE!), and to
participate in technical production which means SELL ADS, PAINT SETS,
DISTRIBUTE POSTERS, HELP WITH PROPS AND COSTUMES. You will be given a
schedule at the first read-through of all rehearsals and performances - you have made
the commitment.......

What are program ads?

Each member of the cast is expected to sell advertisements that are printed in the
program of each show. This is how the drama program is funded and provides money
for field trips and workshops.

What is strike?

Taking down the set and cleaning up. It usually happens the Monday after closing
night........it's a pizza party too!
