Music

The Performing Arts Department of the high school is the culminating experience in a K-12 district program. The performing classes in chorus and band showcase the students’ talents gained in their public school musical training and in their community-based experiences.

Every student has the opportunity to study and participate in music through courses in music theory, appreciation and chorus. Students who have played an instrument for a year or more are encouraged to take band/orchestr

 

960 BAND/ORCHESTRA 1 Credit (Grades 9-12)

Prerequisite: Open to students who have played an instrument for one year or more. Student must be able to read music and know the fundamentals.The band plays three major concerts, performs in the community and for graduation. Two rehearsals at night per concert are mandatory. Members may participate in local, district and state music festivals. The music studied includes standard band/orchestra literature as well as all types of music including Jazz, Rock, Pop, Classical, Broadway shows, etc. There are limits on numbers of guitar players, bass players, and keyboard players permitted in this class.

 

956 CHORUS 1 Credit (Grades 9-12)

Chorus is open to all students who enjoy singing. The chorus performs in concerts at night plus other concerts for the community. Two rehearsals at night per concert are mandatory. Material covered includes exercises for vocal development plus a wide variety of music from the choral literature. Chorus members participate in local, district and state music festivals.

 

943 SELECT CHOIR 1 Credit (Grades 10-12)

Prerequisite: Successful audition done with outside adjudicators in June of the previous academic year.This group will learn and perform challenging 4, 6 and 8-part bocal music. The works will be primarily, but not limited to, a cappella music. The music will range from the Renaissance to contemporary a cappella music. Individual work is stressed including sight-reading, musical style, phrasing, intonation, and diction. Training includes ensemble performance without conductor, as well as solo and smaller ensemble singin. Performance in evening concerts are scheduled and mandatory. Local and All-State festivals are available for the exceptional singer.

 

957 MUSIC THEORY I 1 Credit (Grades 9-12)

This course will be offered for the 2004-2005 academic year and then every other year

This course is designed to carry students from basic music fundamentals through to the beginnings of music composition including rhythmic and melodic dictation. Music theory provides the opportunity to understand the "science" behind the music. If you want to learn how to write down the music you’ve been creating on your guitar or keyboard, this course will build your understanding in chord structure, melody writing and basic guitar skills.

 

998 MUSIC THEORY II 1 Credit (Grades 10-12)

This course will not be offered for the 2004-2005 academic year but will be offered the following year and then every other year.

This course is a continuation of Music Theory I further exploring composition as well as music technology and basic keyboard skills.
