Course Description

 

Half-year courses that include instruction in Physical Education, Health and Guidance are required of all freshmen and sophomores.  Full year physical education and health electives are offered to interested juniors and seniors.  Students are permitted to participate in only one PE/Health course per semester.


 

085                                 P.E./HEALTH                     .5 Credit

(Grade 9)

The focus in freshman physical education is on health-related components of fitness: muscle strength and endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular strength.  The course includes fitness testing, resistance training, games and Project Adventure initiatives.  A course textbook and supplementary materials are used.  The emphasis is on preparing to make healthy lifetime fitness choices.   Units in health will include topics such as alcohol and drug abuse, systems of the human body, AIDS, eating disorders, violence in America, conflict resolution and making healthy choices.

086                                 P.E./HEALTH                     .5 Credit

(Grade 10)

Building on the foundation laid in freshman year, this course includes fitness assessments, individual workouts, games and consumer awareness curriculum to further enable each student to make healthy lifetime fitness choices.  Units in health will include topics such as human sexuality*, American Red Cross Standard First Aid, CPR, communicable and non-communicable diseases and various types of treatment, and making healthy choices.

*Parent Release Information as follows:
Harwich High School will include a unit in Family Life Education in Grade 10 and in elective courses, as part of the Health Education Program.  The goal of this unit is to help our students become healthy, happy, responsible, and caring adults who are able to deal positively with their sexuality and form strong families of their own in the future.

We believe parents are the foremost human sexuality and family life educators, and the purpose of our curriculum is to supplement the efforts of parents.

Should you choose not to have your son or daughter participate in the unit, please notify the school.  A letter will be sent home at the start of each school year.  Your son or daughter will be removed from the class until the unit is over.
Parents/guardians may arrange with the principal to review instructional materials that relate to this curriculum at the school.


 

089                          PEER LEADERSHIP                1 Credit

(Grades 11-12)

This course is designed for students who are interested in taking on a leadership role by promoting positive action in our school and community.  We will be discussing many current health related and social issues such as relationships, dating, violence, diseases, drugs and its effects on society, conflict and conflict resolution, empathy, respect and diversity in a multicultural world.  Each student will be required to complete class assignments as well as plan and implement one school event.  Community service projects will also be required. Senior Peer Leaders will serve as peer mediators as needed by administration.

091                          FITNESS THROUGH                1 Credit

                                     TEAM SPORTS                                  

(Grades 11-12)
This course is open to junior and senior girls and boys who are interested in participating in a variety of team sports, including flag football, basketball, floor hockey, and softball.  In addition, the course requires the design and implementation of an individual personal fitness program.  Vigorous participation is required.

092                   INDIVIDUAL CHALLENGES        1 Credit

(Grades 11-12)
This course is open to juniors and seniors and is held in collaboration with the Harwich Recreation Department.  An outdoor program of kayaking, mountain biking, and hiking in  the fall and spring is complemented by an indoor program of weight training, racquet sports, and rollerblading in the winter.  The psychology of play and cooperative games round out the curriculum.  Vigorous participation is required.

097                         PERSONAL FITNESS               1 Credit

 (Grades 11-12)
This course is open to girls and boys and covers the fundamentals of and current topics in physical fitness, diet, and stress.  It is designed to increase interest in improving the student’s level of fitness and components of fitness.  In addition, the course includes the design and implementation of an individual personal fitness program. Vigorous participation is required.
